Adriana Alas

Due to the forced displacement of her family because of the Civil War violence in the early 1980s in El Salvador, Adriana Alas has devoted part of her research to analyzing the impacts and interpretations of the Salvadoran Civil War, especially in Chalatenango. She  completed her PhD in Social Anthropology at El Colegio de Michoacán in Mexico, an institution where she also studied for her Master’s degree in the same specialty. Alas's dissertation investigates the value of war memories and the negotiation between generations born after the Civil War in Chalatenango. Her dissertation was supported by the Mexican Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología [National Council of Science and Technology, CONACYT], by the Consejo Latinoamericano de Ciencias Sociales [Latin American Council of Social Sciences, CLACSO], and by the Wenner-Gren Foundation. Her academic performance has led her to work with several human rights groups as both a researcher and a social activist. In March 2025, she completed her three-year appointment as a postdoctoral scholar at Western University, Canada, and she is now the Coordinator of Surviving Memory in Post War El Salvador
